Where Do Your Unredeemed Beverage Deposits Go?
Do you know where your dimes go when you don't redeem your beverage deposits? It goes to the Oregon Beverage Recycling Cooperative (OBRC), to fund bottle collection and BottleDrop Redemption Centers. OBRC, which is owned by Oregon beverage distributors and grocery retailers, was formed in 2009 and manages the deposit flow, reimburses grocery retailers for refunds paid to the public, picks up and processes returned beverage containers across the state, and operates BottleDrop Redemption Centers. This system was created to ensure that more containers would be recycled (with no cost to the government); provide easier, more efficient bottle returns for the public; and relieve grocers of having to mix bottle sales with bottle redemptions.
