As of July 25, 2024, the Department of Environmental Quality has approved a program plan from the Mattress Recycling Council for Oregon’s new mattress stewardship program. The approval letter and approved program plan can be found on the DEQ’s program web page. MRC now has seven months from this date to implement the requirements of the Act and the approved program plan.

The revised program plan received from MRC on June 10, 2024, did require modifications per Section 6(2)(b) of the Act. DEQ modified the plan throughout the course of several productive meetings with MRC, to ensure agreement. DEQ looks forward to MRC’s continued partnership for a successful, long-term mattress stewardship program in Oregon.

The Mattress Stewardship Act (SB 1576 of 2022) requires the establishment of a mattress stewardship program for the collection and environmentally sound management of discarded mattresses in Oregon, to be operated and implemented by a non-profit stewardship organization pursuant to a plan approved by DEQ.
